How to Make a Chimera Carving

Sometimes, a carving is a chimera. What is a chimera you ask? The Chimera is a magical beast found in Greek mythology, composed of parts of more than one animal. It is usually depicted as a lion with the head of a goat from its back and a snake’s head as a tail. A good depiction is shown here in the Chimera of Arezzo, a Classical era bronze statue:

How was this custom carving a chimera? It was built out of components from other carvings, just as the chimera was built of a lion, a goat, and a snake. Here is a diagram showing the origin of each component:

These components were modified and tweaked to create the final unified piece that matched the customer’s inspiration photo:

The final result was a beautiful carving with exquisite details that worked along White River’s stock carvings.
