White River Tambour Panel installation
Before You Start
Interior Use Only
Tambour panels are not designed for wet areas or high-humidity locations — no showers, bathrooms, or areas with direct water exposure.
Acclimation
Store flat in a controlled environment and allow 24–48 hours to acclimate before installation or finishing. Do not store rolled or leaning against walls.
Pre-Installation Flex
Lightly roll and unroll each panel to flex the paper backing. Hold rolled for 5+ seconds before returning flat. This loosens the backing and improves flexibility in all directions.
Measure & Layout
1 · Measure
Measure total wall width (left→right) and install height (floor to top line). Mark plumb and level reference lines.
2 · Layout
Decide start point: center for balanced symmetry or one side for a clean edge. Plan seam locations — avoid landing seams at focal points.
3 · Cutting
Apply masking tape on the cut line to reduce fray. Use a sharp blade or fine-tooth jigsaw. Always test on an off-cut first.
Always dry-fit panels before applying adhesive. Confirm layout, verify alignment, and identify any trimming needed.
Surface Preparation
Clean substrate thoroughly. Remove all dust, dirt, and grease. Lightly sand glossy paint if needed for better adhesion.
Accepted substrates: MDF, plywood, and drywall. Surface must be flat and rigid.
Install only in a controlled environment. Standard room temperature and humidity required.
Finishing
Panels can be finished using standard wood techniques before or after installation. Stain, paint, oil, and clear coat are all compatible. When finishing pre-install, allow panels to slump slightly — this opens the gaps between slats so finish reaches the sides. Test color on an off-cut first.
Adhesive Coverage
Recommended: TiteBond Fast Grab FRP
Also compatible: PVA, contact adhesive, epoxy, and other high-quality panel adhesives.

Trowel application: Full coverage 80–100% to within ¼″ of panel edge.
Caulk gun: Continuous perimeter bead + horizontal stripes every 4–6″.

Step-by-Step Installation
1
Roll panel inward to stretch
Roll the panel inward (face side in) to begin loosening the paper backing. This is the first step in the pre-flex process.
Roll tambour inward
2
Flex outward with firm force
Flex outward with considerable force to fully stretch the paper backing. The panel will become noticeably more flexible — this is correct and expected.

3
Apply adhesive & set panel with expansion gaps
Apply adhesive per coverage guide. Set panel vertically or horizontally. Leave a gap between adjacent panels — approximately two stacked business cards — to allow for natural wood movement. Use a ¾″ sacrificial board when pressing; never hammer directly on the face.
Leave expansion gaps between panels
4
Secure temporarily while adhesive cures
Use a few drywall screws at top/bottom or bracing to hold panels in place while adhesive cures (allow up to 24 hours). Remove temporary fasteners after full cure and patch as needed. Clean any adhesive squeeze-out immediately.
Press panels firmly into place
Alternative: Z-Clip Install (removable, clean finish)
For a removable installation with minimal wall damage:

1. Mount Z-clips level and square to the wall using appropriate fasteners.
2. Hang panels by mating the panel-side clip onto the wall clips.
3. Final adjustments are easy and panels can be removed without damage.
Important Notes & Warranty
Do not mount furniture or cabinetry through tambour panels. Independent movement of furniture will cause buckling or adhesion failure. This voids the warranty.
Test adhesion on a small area first. Especially when using a substrate or adhesive not listed in this guide.
Keep adhesive off panel faces. Remove squeeze-out immediately — dried adhesive can permanently stain slat faces.
Tambour Quick FAQ
Do I need to acclimate the panels?+
Yes — acclimate flat in the install environment for 24–48 hours to minimize movement after installation.
Can I install in a bathroom?+
No — tambour is intended for interior, climate-controlled spaces. Avoid wet or high-humidity areas.
Can I finish after installation?+
Yes. You can finish before or after installation. If finishing pre-install, let the panel slump slightly to expose the slat sides to the finish.
