Some materials announce themselves. Others simply make a room feel right the moment you walk in. At a newly built fast-casual salad restaurant, our SWP104 1″ Bead Solid Wood Tongue and Groove Panel in White Oak does the latter, and does it beautifully, across nearly every wall in the space.

The project was built by our friends at Nyman Construction Co. of Cleveland, Ohio, and it’s a great example of how one well-chosen paneling profile can carry an entire commercial interior. Here’s a closer look at the product and how it was used.

The product: SWP104WO at a glance

SWP104 is the most classic profile in our Premium Solid Wood Paneling collection: one clean, rounded 1″ bead per plank, milled from solid hardwood with tongue and groove edges. Each plank measures 3/4″ thick, 4-3/16″ wide, and a generous 112″ long, which is enough to cover most commercial wall heights in a single run with no horizontal seams.

For this project, the panels were specified in White Oak, one of five North American hardwoods offered in this profile, along with Poplar, Maple, Red Oak, and Walnut. White Oak’s straight grain and warm, honeyed tone made it a natural fit for a brand built around fresh, natural ingredients. Like every panel in the SWP line, it’s made in the USA.

How it was used

Walk into the restaurant and the paneling is the first thing that frames the experience. At the ordering wall, the 1″ bead runs floor to ceiling and surrounds the large digital menu boards, so the screens read as if they were set into a wall of warm wood rather than hung on drywall. The vertical rhythm of the beads draws the eye upward to a long planter shelf spilling over with trailing pothos. That pairing works precisely because the wood and the greenery speak the same organic language.

In the dining room, the panels sit above a band of deep teal glazed tile and a continuous caramel leather banquette. The designers made a smart move here, breaking the long wall into bays with slim terracotta-toned vertical reveals. It’s a simple detail, but it gives scale to a wall that could otherwise feel endless, and it echoes the planter shelf above.

Dome sconces cast soft pools of light that rake across the beaded surface, and this is where a true milled profile earns its keep. Each rounded bead catches light on one side and falls into shadow on the other, creating depth and texture that shift throughout the day. Printed, laminated, or flat “slat-look” products simply can’t replicate that.

The White Oak also ties into the room’s other natural wood elements, from the solid tabletops to the light chair frames, so the whole space reads as one warm, cohesive palette.

Why solid wood works in commercial spaces

Restaurants are tough on finishes. Solid 3/4″-thick hardwood has the physical presence and durability to stand up to a busy dining room, and because it’s real wood all the way through, minor scuffs can be sanded and refinished rather than replaced. Tongue and groove construction keeps planks aligned and tight across long runs, which matters on a wall this visible.
